    Created by: John McDonald
    Publisher: Islandport Press

A Moose and a Lobster Walk Into a Bar is a wonderful mix of classic Maine storytelling, stretched truths, and wry observations made by John McDonald during his many travels through the Pine Tree State. In this collection of essays and stories, John extols the important economic power of Maine’s yard sale industry, bemoans the fact that Massachusetts, still upset because it allowed Maine to become a state in 1820, is buying it back one house at a time, and relates how the state’s infamous black fly was really just an attempt at controlling tourists gone haywire. You will also meet Maine characters like Uncle Abner, Merrill Minzey, and Hollis Eaton, and find yourself pondering just where the truth ends and the story begins.

Prince Edward Island National Park Past and Present

    Created by: Parks And People
    Publisher: Acorn Press

Since Prince Edward Island National Park was first created in 1937 it has welcomed visitors from around the world, captivating the hearts of all who experience its serene and tranquil beauty. Stretching for about 40 km along the north shore of Prince Edward Island between New London and Tracadie Bays and the tip of the Greenwich Peninsula in St. Peters Bay, this dynamic coastal landscape is constantly changing, shaped by the wind and waves. The sand dunes and beaches, wetlands and forests provide a home for many plants and animals. Wildflowers add colour everywhere and marram grass glistens in the sunlight, rippled by the coastal breezes. Great blue herons grace the ponds and marshes and shorebirds feed along the water’s edge. Several species at risk are protected in the park, including the endangered piping plover. People have been part of this coastal landscape for thousands of years. At Greenwich, archaeological evidence reveals 10,000 years of cultural history, from early Aboriginal peoples to the Mi’kmaq, early French and Acadian settlers and immigrants from the British Isles. Once an elegant summer home built in 1896, Dalvay-by-the-Sea National Historic Site is now a heritage inn. Green Gables Heritage Place, also part of L. M. Montgomery`s Cavendish National Historic site, inspired L.M. Montgomery’s setting for Anne of Green Gables. This book, with stunning new photography by the Island’s best photgraphers complimented with archival photos, captures the essence of this special place, preserved and protected for you to return to again and again.

    Vintage Cabot Trail

    Created by: Terry MacLean

For 75 years, the Cabot Trail, one of the world’s most stunning travelways, has not only relieved isolation, it has captivated, charmed and challenged motorists, cyclists, runners and walkers alike.

This booklet commemorates the 75th anniversary (1932-2007) of the designation of the Cabot Trail by revisiting the Trail’s earliest years through images from the archives of the Beaton Institute at Cape Breton University.

Terry MacLean, PhD, is a retired CBU Professor, a writer and heritage consultant living in Sydney. He was former Senior Historian at the Fortress of Louisbourg and is the author of books and articles on aspects of Cape Breton history and culture.

  • Long Shots

    Long Shots

Today, the National Hockey League holds a monopoly on professional hockey, at least on this side of the Atlantic. In the early 1900s, a host of professional, minor-pro, senior, junior, and college leagues competed across the continent. More than a decade remained before the Stanley Cup would become the sole property of the NHL. In this era, it was a challenge cup, and it seemed as though every Canadian town–big or small–had a fair shot at the big prize.

In these pre-NHL days, four teams from the Maritimes took up the challenge, competing for what was, even then, hockey’s biggest prize. The 1900 Halifax Crescents club was followed in 1906 by the New Glasgow Cubs, in 1912 by the Moncton Victorias, and in 1913 by the Sydney Millionaires. In Long Shots, author Trevor Adams traces the development of early hockey in the region and follows these four Maritime clubs that competed for hockey’s greatest prize, from their hard-fought victories and local celebrity, to their crushing disappointments.

Includes 25 historical photos and an appendix of statistics and standings.
