Description
Tracy Barron has always been drawn to churches, which often provide the oldest and most beautiful architecture in any country. She added a church pump organ to her collection of antiques before she owned a church. In her travels, she has visited some of the most beautiful churches in the world, including Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France; St. James’s Church, Westminster, England; Sacrario Christo Re, Messina, Italy; Duomo Cathedral, Livorno, Italy; Cathedral de Mallorca, Palma, Spain; Columbia’s Salt Cathedral; Columbia’s Sanctuary of the Fallen Lord of Monserrate, and Barcelona Cathedral and Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, Spain. Having visited and studied churches worldwide, Tracy developed a special interest in Nova Scotia churches and what became of them after they had been decommissioned or abandoned and subsequently repurposed. With rising operating costs and diminishing congregations, many smaller churches have been challenged to even keep their doors open. Those who couldn’t faced a precarious future, but some found salvation. This book contains profiles of 20 such examples ? from museums to private homes. Of particular interest are the human stories behind these transformations — the special people who saw a future for these distinctive buildings and made a commitment to save them.
