Description
Perhaps the most famous lighthouse in all of Canada is situated at Peggy’s Cove on Nova Scotia’s picturesque south shore. near Halifax. Perched on an outcropping of rocks over 400 million years old, this famous beacon has a distinctive octagonal shape and features a lantern room at the top, which emits a white light visible for several nautical miles. But come the high tourist season in the summer months, it is used as a post office, complete with its own cancellation stamp. Naturally, the stamp is… a lighthouse!
The tiny fishing village is part of the much larger and equally scenic St. Margaret’s Bay, and likely got its name because “Peggy” is a common nickname for Margaret. But, there is also folklore to be considered. The more romantic version has the village named after the sole survivor of a 19th century shipwreck, washed up on the rocks during a hurricane. Legend has it that the young “Peggy” married one of her rescuers — a local fisherman — and lived happily ever after!
The area is a summer mecca for artists and photographers. It’s stunning sunrises and friendly local flavour only add to the many reasons to visit. The very name Peggy’s Cove is synonymous with the natural, unspoiled beauty of Nova Scotia’s south shore.
