Today is I Read Canadian Day, a national celebration of Canadian books for young readers, and I couldn’t be happier to be sharing some of my favourite young readers’ books with you.

As Nimbus’s children’s book editor, a former children’s bookseller, and a lifelong reader, I’ve seen the impact that the right book can have on a young reader firsthand. Whether it helps them make sense of the world around them, dive into new cultures and experiences, or just enjoy a great story, there’s a book out there for every kid.

These books, chosen from Nimbus’s 2023 releases, are just a few of my favourites for readers of all ages to enjoy today on I Read Canadian Day—and every day!

Maud Lewis Colours by Carol McDougall and Shanda LaRamee-Jones

This baby board book is a perfectly curated first introduction to the joyful art of Maud Lewis and a great way to help baby learn their colours. With bold contrasting colours on every page and simple phrases, this book will engage even the youngest reader.

My Favourite Colour written by Lindsay Ruck and illustrated by Bryanna Chapeskie

This delightful rhyming picture book will help readers see a rainbow in the world around them, whether its in yellow flowers, green vegetables, or black cats. Every colour—and every kid—is perfectly wonderful, just the way they are.

Out of the Dark by Julie Lawson

Julie Lawson is a masterful historical fiction writer. This follow-up book to A Blinding Light also reads well as a standalone novel, introducing young readers to the Halifax of 1918 and the Spanish influenza pandemic. Written with sensitivity and a keen eye to accurate historical detail, both fiction and non-fiction lovers will enjoy this middle-grade story.

Lore Isle by Jiin Kim

This debut novel was ten years in the making, and this dedication is evident in the incredibly detailed fantasy world Jiin Kim has created. With mummers, murderous plants, and shape-shifters, and one twelve-year-old boy on a heroic journey, Lore Isle will entertain any young adventure-seeker.

Amazing L’nu’k written by Julie Pellissier-Lush and Robin Grant and illustrated by James Bentley

These easy-to-read biographies are a great way to satisfy the keen non-fiction fan. With profiles of historical and contemporary artists, scientists, athletes, and leaders in Mi’kma’ki, there’s something to interest and inspire every reader in this book.
