The Halifax Central Library will be hosting author George Elliott Clarke in the Paul O’Regan Hall for the launch of his new book Black Activist, Black Scientist, Black Icon: The Autobiography of Dr. Howard D. McCurdy.

Dr. Howard D. McCurdy was a civil rights activist, a politician, a scientist, a university professor, and a Member of Parliament. The first person of African descent to hold a tenure-track position in a Canadian university, he founded and was President of the Canadian College of Microbiologists, co-founded and was president of the National Black Coalition of Canada, and was Canada’s second Black Member of Parliament.

Author Lindsay Ruck will moderate a panel discussion featuring former Poet Laureate George Elliott Clarke, Senator Don Oliver, former MLA Yvonne Atwell, and current MLA Tony Ince. They will discuss Dr. McCurdy’s legacy in the context of Black Canadian political and public life, and its attendant joys and pressures.
