Father Fell Down the Well

  Author:   Kendall Morse
  Publisher:  Islandport Press

Captain Kendall Morse has been telling stories and singing songs since he was knee high to a grasshopper in Machias, Maine. He learned it naturally first from his Great Uncle while growing up on the coast and later on the docks and ships when he worked as a Captain and on stages as he performed across the region and overseas. His latest book, Father Fell Down the Well is a wonderful collection of traditional Downeast stories that he has collected during his career. The Maine native writes with such vibrancy and precision that the classic Maine accent shines through his prose, never detracting but only adding to the book’s sometimes subtle, sometimes laugh-out-loud humour.

For decades, Kendall Morse has been a multitalented entertainment force. Born and raised in Machias, Maine, the grandnephew of a renowned local storyteller, Kendall began telling stories professionally in the early 1970s. He eventually hosted a show on Maine Public Television called In the Kitchen, wrote a book by the same name, and released a popular album called Seagulls and Summer People. Kendall was also a successful folk singer. Three times he was voted Folksinger of the Year by the Maine Country Music Association, was inducted into the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame in 1995, and was nominated for a Grammy in 2009 for his role in the double CD, Singing through the Hard Times, a tribute to Utah Phillips. Father Fell Down the Well is a wonderful collection of traditional Downeast stories collected and performed by Kendall during a career of performing in Maine and across America.
